About Nitrous Oxide
Nitrous oxide gas is called many things, such as inhalation sedation, happy gas, and laughing gas. Its most popular use is to tranquilize patients for a brief time throughout dental treatments. At The Rim Dental Care and Orthodontics in San Antonio, TX, our dentists offer this odorless, colorless gas to relieve any discomfort for the patient while having a treatment and to help them remain at ease. Our dentists will adjust the level of nitrous oxide given to the patient. Because nitrous oxide gas is a conscious sedation technique, the patient won't fall asleep, however they will feel more comfortable. The patient remains conscious enough to hear our dentists and perform any directions throughout the treatment.

What to Expect
Oxygen is typically put with the nitrous oxide gas for reliable effects. Our dentists will start the nitrous oxide sedation by setting a cover on top of the patient’s face that will be consumed when the patient breathes like normal. The patient will start to feel woozy quickly when the nitrous oxide gas goes into effect. The patient may then start to feel a tingling sensation (typically in the legs and arms) or a warm, pulsating feeling throughout their body. When at its maximum impact, the nitrous oxide will make the patient feel euphoria and permit our dentists to perform the treatment without any distress for the patient. The nitrous oxide gas will be used as needed, and the gas can be turned off and on by our dentists based on the patient’s needs.
As soon as the nitrous oxide is turned off, its effects will be out of the patient's body in a few minutes. The patient will experience no long-term effects and they may go home following the treatment. There are generally no lasting negative reactions caused by nitrous oxide during sedation, however a few patients can feel mild stomach trouble. To avoid stomach trouble, the patient is advised to have some food before their treatment at The Rim Dental Care and Orthodontics.
The dental insurance payment of nitrous oxide gas sedation will change based on the purpose for use. If sedation is required for a specific treatment, it's generally paid at least partly by the patient’s insurance company. If the nitrous oxide gas is elected by the patient to help with anxiety or fear, the insurance plan may not pay the expense for sedation. The front office of The Rim Dental Care and Orthodontics in San Antonio, TX will contact the patient’s insurance company to maximize their insurance benefits and out-of-pocket costs. The Rim Dental Care and Orthodontics takes several types of payment and can help to join patients to financing options.
